School
Tours.
Roman
Tours provide some of the only soldiers in Britain who work all year
round, in all weathers in authentic uniform which gives us a unique
perspective on the life and hardships of the soldiers 2000 years ago.
We work
alongside the Grosvenor Museum in Chester adding another dimension to
there excellent hands-on investigation activity sessions.
Schools
find that a visit to the museum combined with a Roman Tour is an ideal
way to either start a Roman Topic or reinforce the teaching that has
already gone on in school.
Groups
are met at an agreed place, usually the Grosvenor Museum by a Roman
soldier in authentic replica armour, be he an auxiliary a legionary
or a Centurion. The group is brought to attention in style similar to
the modern military sergeant major.
After
a brief introduction/welcome to the fortress of Deva (Chester). The
recruits are given an initial insight into the life of the soldier and
the rigours that he must endure in stinking, miserable, freezing cold,
lousy, soaking wet Britain. All recruits now swear an oath to the Emperor.
Marching to various parts of the fort the recruits are now required
to gather round the soldier as he combines the information that they
know with new information and explanation of areas of interest.
The
tour of duty majors on the life of the soldier here in Britain and makes
good use of existing historical remains to illustrate the information
given, about ships and transportation of goods and equipment the height
and size of the fort, the benefits of a soldiers life.
The
tour also covers why the Romans came to Britain, how they changed British
society and culture at all levels i.e. sanitation, aqueducts, entertainments,
and the establishment of infrastructure that we take for granted today.
Our
soldiers provide an interactive and memorable experience rather than
just a talk as this has proved to encourage the learning that the children
receive.
Our
soldiers have a considerable knowledge so the tours can be adapted to
meet the needs of each group. We cater for both primary and secondary
schools.
